Air Source Heat Pump Installation

This ASHP saved our customer £6,500 per annum in fuel costs by replacing their existing wet electric boiler.

Background

This 2019 barn conversion style property was fitted with a wet underfloor heating system and unvented cylinder, but had a wet electric boiler. With the ever-rising electricity prices, the owners were looking for a way to permanently reduce their annual bill of £8,500, contacting NCS to discuss more cost-effective heating solutions. After an initial consultation, the property was deemed to be ideal for an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), as a logical and extremely economical upgrade for their heating and hot water system.

The Install

This property opted for a Mitsubishi Ultra Quiet R32 8.5kW Air Source Heat Pump and 200 Litre Pre-Packaged Cylinder, which allowed for integration with their existing heating and hot water systems and controls. The key features of this ASHP included a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of 4.49, or yearly efficiency of 449% for heating, and quiet operation with a sound pressure level at 1m dB rating of just 45, quieter than the average fridge-freezer (40dB). The Pre-Packaged Cylinder benefits from rapid recovery rates, pairing with the 8.5kW ASHP to provide a flow rate of up to 24 litres per minute. In addition, the system was enabled to support MELCloud, offering wireless control via a smartphone app plus remote monitoring, maintenance, and tech support.

Thanks to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the owners were able to access a £5,000 government grant to reduce their installation costs. To be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, you must:

  • own the property you’re applying for (including if it’s a business, a second home, or a property you rent out to tenants)
  • have installed (or plan to install) your new heating system on or after 1 April 2022
  • be replacing fossil fuel heating systems (such as oil, gas or electric)
  • have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for your property, with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation

The Outcome

The new system saw a 77% decrease in their CO2 footprint, down to just 2.5 tonnes per annum, in addition to providing an effective solution to their electricity cost problem, with a fantastic 76% saving on energy bills – reduced to just £2,000 a year.
