Air Source Heat Pump Installation

This ASHP saved our customer £1,300 per annum in fuel costs, by replacing their oil boiler.

Background

This 1995 four-bed semi-detached property had an ageing oil boiler and copper cylinder, incurring a £2,500 annual fuel bill and CO2 output of 8.6 tonnes per annum. Facing ever-rising oil prices, poor pressure, and hot water that constantly ran out, this customer came to NCS to enquire about the suitability of alternative heating solutions to assist in reducing their energy bills and minimising their carbon footprint. After an initial consultation, the property was deemed to be ideal for an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) with associated unvented high recovery cylinder – a logical and extremely economical upgrade for their heating and hot water.

The Install

This property opted for a Grant HPID10R32 Quiet Mark R32 10kW Air Source Heat Pump and Grant 250 Litre Pre-Plumbed Quick Recovery Cylinder, which offered fantastic compatibility for the integration into their existing heating and hot water controls and Nest Smart Controls, providing mains pressure hot water and affordable heating. The key features of this ASHP included a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of 4.29, or yearly efficiency of 429% for heating, and quiet operation with a sound pressure level at 1m dB rating of just 53, quieter than a conversation between two people sitting at a distance of one metre (60dB). In addition, the Pre-Plumbed Quick Recovery Cylinder provided the benefit of rapid recovery rates, and options for up to three central heating zones.

Thanks to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the owners were able to access a £5,000 government grant to reduce their installation costs. To be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, you must:

  • own the property you’re applying for (including if it’s a business, a second home, or a property you rent out to tenants)
  • have installed (or plan to install) your new heating system on or after 1 April 2022
  • be replacing fossil fuel heating systems (such as oil, gas or electric)
  • have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for your property, with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation

The Outcome

Our client’s energy bill was brought down to just £1,200 annually, and their heating’s carbon footprint reduced by 6.5 tonnes of CO2 annually to 2.1 tonnes per annum – a massive 76% decrease.
