What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides upfront grants towards qualifying low-carbon heating installations in England and Wales.

For most eligible air-to-water heat pump installations, the grant is £7,500. In addition, eligible off-gas-grid properties heated by oil or LPG may receive £9,000 until 31 March 2027.

The scheme is installer-led. This means an MCS-certified installer applies for and redeems the voucher on behalf of the property owner.

The grant is deducted from your installation costThe full grant value must appear as an upfront discount on the quotation and final invoice.

Who May Be Eligible?

Eligibility depends on the property, the existing heating system and the technology being installed. The points below provide a general guide.

The property must normally be located in England or Wales.
The new system must replace an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system.
The installation must use an eligible technology and meet the required technical standards.
Most new-build properties are not eligible. However, qualifying self-build properties may be considered.
Social housing and properties that already received funding for the same heat pump installation are not normally eligible.
For the £9,000 grant, the property must be off the gas grid and currently heated by oil or LPG.
The heat pump must be capable of meeting the required space-heating demand and comply with the scheme rules.

EPC, Insulation and Property Efficiency

A valid EPC number may be used as part of the grant application. However, outstanding loft or cavity-wall insulation recommendations do not automatically prevent a property from receiving the grant.

Even so, insulation can reduce heat loss and improve heat pump performance. Therefore, it may still be worth addressing suitable efficiency measures before or alongside the installation.

NCS can help improve the wider propertyOur team can discuss insulation, heating-system upgrades and the steps needed to prepare your home for low-carbon heating.
