There are three main types of gas boiler: conventional, combi and system boilers. Since 2005, every newly fitted gas boiler regardless of type must be a condensing boiler with an efficiency rating of “A”, designed to heat up your home and water as efficiently as possible. But which type is right for you and your family?
Choosing the right boiler for your home can be confusing, with many factors to consider from the size and type of the property to the number of bathrooms, number of users, the area’s water pressure, and your available space. But that’s where we come in. Use our online tool to get a free quote for your specific requirements, and we’ll be in touch with expert advice and support on finding a boiler that will work for your property and needs.
Conventional or regular gas boilers have three main components - the boiler, a separate hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank typically installed into your loft. Able to produce large amounts of hot water for multiple bathrooms at the same time, conventional boilers are perfect for larger families with enough loft space for the tank. Conventional boilers may be more suitable than system boilers if you live in an area with low water pressure or have older heating systems.
These boilers don't provide instant hot water on demand and take time to heat up, so you'll need to warm it in advance or set a timed programme so you have hot water when you need it.
Combination or combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when it's required, without a hot water cylinder or cold water tank in your loft. Providing instant hot water for one water outlet at a time, combi boiler systems are generally more suitable for smaller households, flats and bungalows where space is at a premium and there are a smaller number of users with modest heating and hot water demands.
Some of the latest combination boilers can suit larger households, but they can be less efficient than a system boiler or provide a smaller amount of hot water when multiple showers, radiators or taps are used at the same time.
System boilers are connected directly from the mains and store hot water for later use in a separate cylinder without the need for a cold water tank. This allows for multiple water outlets to be used at the same time without a reduction in pressure, making them a great choice for homes with large demands for heating and hot water. For these homes, system boilers can help you save on running costs and installation, whilst improving your energy efficiency if insulated correctly.
The amount of hot water you have is limited to the capacity of your cylinder, and when this runs out you will have to wait for the tank to heat back up.
Under the ECO4 scheme, qualifying homeowners can access a grant for a wide range of efficiency improvements for their home. From solid wall insulation (internal and external), cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, and pitched roof & roof room insulation, to solar PV panels, heating systems & controls, and more.
