The answer may surprise you – modern solar panels are built to perform for several decades. But lifespan is only part of the story. How long do solar panels last?

Most quality solar panels are designed to last between 25 and 30 years. Some manufacturers quote even longer operational lifespans. This does not mean the panels stop working after that point – it simply means they are warranted to perform at a minimum level for that period.

It is worth noting that solar panels rarely fail outright. Rather, their efficiency gradually decreases over time as a natural result of weather exposure and the photovoltaic process itself.

What is panel degradation?

Every solar panel loses a small amount of efficiency each year – this is known as degradation. For quality panels, the typical degradation rate is around 0.5% per year. Over 25 years, that means a panel might be operating at roughly 87-88% of its original capacity by the end of its warranted lifespan – still generating meaningful savings.

Understanding solar panel warranties

There are typically two types of warranty to be aware of when purchasing a solar PV system:

  • Performance warranty: This guarantees that the panels will produce a minimum percentage of their rated output over a set number of years – typically 80-90% output after 25 years.
  • Product warranty: This covers defects in materials and manufacturing. Most reputable manufacturers offer between 10 and 15 years on the product itself, though some offer longer.

It is essential to understand both warranties before committing to an installation, and to ensure your installer is MCS-accredited.
